Weak Links And Energy Leaks
Ever started a training program and a few weeks into it your knee starts to hurt?

This pain is usually caused by Micro trauma. Micro trauma results when small amounts
of stress are imposed on the body overtime caused by poor biomechanics or over training.

Poor biomechanics are movement mistakes in which the body compensates and uses suboptimal joint alignment,
muscle coordination, and posture. Usually these mistakes cannot be seen by the untrained eye and don't
immediately hinder performance. They manifest as fatigue and appear when the fundamentals of conditioning
and technique are not observed. What is causing these errors is what we call a weak link.
Energy leaks result from weak links. Poor efficiency+stress= energy leaks.

Energy leaks occur when all of the energy generated to perform a certain task or movement
does not go specifically into that task or movement. Science and common sense tells us that the energy must go somewhere,
this misdirected energy usually creates stress within the body.

This stress can cause unnecessary work or movement in another part of the body, placing greater
stress on certain muscles (strains) or cause awkward motion of the spine or limbs placing
greater stress on the joints and ligaments (sprains) if this trauma continues for weeks or months
the athlete will pay the price. Lets say you are stiff through the hips and you put off a
flexibility training to focus on power and explosive training.

You start a plyometric program, a lot of high intensity plyometric movements requires you to
lift your knees as high as possible. This type of training requires rapid acceleration, leg strength and good form.
If you attempt this type of training without hip flexibility you will use some other form of movement
to help gain the knee lift necessary for plyometric training.
The brain will compensate for the lack of flexibility and use alternative movement patterns
you are working around the weak link and its creating an energy leak.
